Champagne socialists just don't understand.
I put a question up yesterday that asked how socialism would create a free society. I said it was open to interpretation, however they wanted to take and answer the question they were free do so.  All I learnt was the people that answered do not understand the market, basic economics, or possibly even their own left-wing ideologies. The people that answered all leaned towards work. I’m...

Open question...
ftm-communist: scottishlibertarian: Interpret this how ever you want with regards to civil liberties, democracy or what ever, but how would socialism create a free society? Socialism would allow people to work in a way that benefits themselves as well as all others, without feeling the constraints and fears of being a wage slave. But we all work in a way that benefits ourselves. The main...

£2.3 Million in credit card spending by Scottish... →
How is a government body that is there to help Scottish Businesses possibly say that spending £183 on teddy bears is justifiable? Or seven grand on alcohol in 2 years? It isn’t just and isn’t fair, especially at a time of recession. Surely the left and right can agree on that?

First week back at Uni.
So I’ve been a bit light on the posts. Not because I’m busy but because I’m lazy.  I’ve spent all my spare time reading ‘Atlas Shrugged’ and just got a copy of David Friedmans ‘Hidden Order’ so can’t see me surfacing for a while…

Strike in support of driver who called in a... →
A union are calling a strike in support of a train driver who was demoted after calling in to work sick, only to then go to Germany to watch Rangers play Hamburg. The driver was caught and demoted. The union argue this has cost him £20,000 a year. Full details found through the link. Surely the driver is lucky to have only been demoted? Scotrail claim that the drivers decision to not go in to...

Housing problems.
When it comes to the credit crunch everyone knows who is to blame. It was the bankers, of course. How dare you think otherwise! It’s an easy but lazy answer which people come to with little dissection of what happened. If you ask the people who give this as an answer a couple of questions they appreciate that the recession is the result of growth sustained on a housing bubble. A bubble...

Is Margaret Thatcher dead? →
No. But apparently the rumour did the rounds again last night. I’ve had a lazy day but feel guilty so this is a short post (which is really nothing more that a link).  Vice magazine is always full of awesome irrelevance but this article is better that usual. It condemns the left and the right, making it a strangely balanced piece. You should read it just for this paragraph - ”OK. So...

Inflated assets.
Over the last couple of weeks there has been a deluge of stories regarding dangerous breast implants in Europe (if you’ve been living under a rock Google ‘pip implants’). Here in the UK the government has now decided it will sue any private clinics that used dangerous implants and are now refusing to remove them. Yesterday, the Harley Medical Group said that did not have enough...

Trade unions receive £113 million of public funds. →
The tax payers alliance have used Freedom of Information requests (FoI) to try and establish the extend of public funding of trade unions. On top of a mental £33 million in direct payments they received £80 million for paid staff time. This occurs when public sector staff are allotted time to carry out union duties - all at the expense of the public. If a person decides represent their fellow...

Ten 100-year predictions that came true. →
Off-topic from usual but this is doing the rounds on the internet at the moment. In 1900 an American civil engineer named John Elfreth Watkins made some predictions about life in the year 2000 - and got some of them spookily right.  Check the link!

The Guardian spelled ‘parties’ wrong. I can’t imagine what protests there could possibly be at a state funeral for Thatcher. However I can envisage riots kicking off as people queue to piss on her grave. Wherever she is eventually buried the local authority will probably spend weeks trying to find the broken sewer pipe as rivers of urine run down the streets.

Swimming Meerkats. →
Why would an aquarium have meerkats? This aquarium is about 20 minutes away from where I stay so when I heard about them having meerkats this led to day dreams of them having miniature scuba gear and flippers. Which would be totally awesome.

An investigation has been launched which to me seems like a waste of time. When the wind was measured at 102 mph surely it doesn’t take a team of meteorologists to solve this one.  I would be more concerned about making sure terrorists can’t get their hands on a kite…

Goodbye Facebook.
My new years resolution? To delete my Facebook account and stay away from that particular social network for as long as I can. Earlier today I spent an hour surfing around the site and achieved nothing. Facebook is bad for the soul. Photos are no longer spontaneous but are staged so that even the person the camera is in the photo. This is not done to make sure nobody is left out, it is done so...

Fourth Time Lucky.
I’ve tried to write blogs in the past but I’ve yet to stick to one. I put it down to having ideas above my station - lofty blogs about politics and the like. After a month or two it becomes painfully obvious that no one gives a fuck what you think. My aim this time round is to write something closer to how I think and feel instead of writing what I feel I should. New year, new blog.
